FAQ

Choosing your Durham Region city

Is Oshawa a good place to live?

Yes. Oshawa is Durham Region's largest city, home to about 175,000 people, and it is typically the most affordable of the region's southern cities. It combines a GO train connection to Toronto, a Lake Ontario waterfront, two post-secondary campuses (Ontario Tech University and Durham College), and the region's biggest shopping centre. Its mix of condos, townhouses, and detached homes makes it a strong entry point for first-time buyers while still offering family neighbourhoods in the north end.

How does Oshawa compare to Whitby?

Whitby sits just west of Oshawa on the 401 and is generally more expensive, with average home prices around $950,000 to $1 million versus roughly $730,000 to $800,000 in Oshawa. Whitby's GO train ride to Union is a few minutes shorter, and its high schools, led by Donald A. Wilson and Henry Street, consistently rank among the top in Durham Region. Oshawa offers more affordable entry points, a bigger downtown, and both a university and a college campus, while Whitby leans toward established family suburbs and top-rated schools.

Which Durham Region city is most affordable?

Oshawa is the most affordable of Durham Region's southern cities, with average home prices around $730,000 to $800,000, and Brock is the least expensive municipality in the region overall at roughly $670,000, though it sits well north of the 401. For buyers who want GO train access and urban amenities, Oshawa is the value pick; for those happy with rural, acreage living, Brock offers the lowest entry price in Durham Region.
